In our series of A SIT DOWN WITH we speak with our Head of Small Business Unit, Andy McDermott.
Do you enjoy working at MFL?
Having only being here for 6 months, I feel I have settled in really well and absolutely enjoy every day at work!
What made you want to join MFL?
I saw the opportunity to come on board at MFL Insurance Group, as Head of Small Business and felt this would be a great personal opportunity.
This is a role where I could challenge myself and contribute to an exciting period in the company’s development where they have made significant investment in people and systems to enable us to continue to offer the best Professional Indemnity solutions but now also have the expanded internal knowledge to enable MFL to place a wide range of commercial business.
What have you found most challenging during your time here?
Understanding how the MFL organisation works. MFL have a number of schemes for PI and liabilities and understanding our appetite and approach to this business has been a learning curve.
If you had to sum up your role here in one sentence, what would it be?
Generally, my team looks after all Professions PI businesses paying under £5k, I am also tasked with increasing MFLs general commercial insurance footprint.
What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical day for me would involve a review of upcoming renewals, including evaluating and submitting to insurers for terms. Following this I would look to at any new enquiries we have and reviewing their submissions.
What’s your favourite way to spend a day off?
I would have to say, a long early morning walk with my girlfriend and our dog. Followed by an afternoon in the pub watching football.
What has surprised you most about working here / dealing with clients?
The biggest surprise for me was the large cross-section of trades and clients up and down the country.
What has been your favourite part of working at MFL?
Aside from the people who have been so welcoming and happy to share their knowledge of Professional Indemnity. I would have to say that so far no two days have been the same. I have had some interesting commercial enquiries most of which we have been able to successfully assist with.
What do you want MFL to be famous for?
I would like MFL to be recognised throughout the insurance industry and our wider associations as trusted insurance brokers who can assist with all business insurance requirements from their professional indemnity to commercial combined, property owners and motor fleet as well as everything in between.
